Activities

Fishing is one of the most popular activities at Birch Bank Camp. Fishing on Commanda Lake is excellent. The lake contains Northern Pike, Pickerel (Walleye) and both Large and Small Mouth Bass.

Fishing from the end of our dock is great for the kids, and they have been known to catch some real beauties.

In addition to fishing, swimming at our natural sandy beach is a must, and  water skiing and tubing from the end of our dock, is a favorite with our guests who have boats large enough for this activity.

The camp rents boats and motors, canoes, and paddleboats for those who don't bring their own, but wish to explore the lake or take in some of the shoreline scenery.

For the four-wheeling enthusiasts, there are numerous trails available throughout the area. Guiding may be provided for an additional fee.

In addition to all the water activities, many of our guests enjoy hiking, biking, and jogging.  Birchbank Camp is located well away from the main roads and busy traffic. For this reason it is an ideal location for those who prefer these activities.

For those who like to sight- see the area, we have daytime passes to the Restoule Provincial Park, that we loan to our guests upon request. Stormy and Restoule lakes, located within the park, have excellent fishing for the fisherman who prefers the larger species such as lake- trout and muskie.

This 42", 23lb. Muskie was caught in nearby Stormy Lake, by one of our campers.

Hiking trails are abundant within the park and offer the finest scenery.  Sunlight & Shadows, a tourism business 4 km down the road from our camp also offers hiking trails to scenic peak areas over-looking lakes Commanda and Restoule.  They also offer hay rides and craft workshops for adults and children alike.

There are also several golf courses in the North Bay and Powassan area. They are generally within a 30 or 40 minute drive from the camp and offer a good challenge to the most avid golfers.

There are several other attractions in the area for those interested. These include country-road tours during which the tourist can visit various craft shops, potteries, bee hive honey productions, glass studios, art studios and many other points of interest.

In North Bay there are daily cruises available on the "Chief Commanda". The cruises vary in length to accommodate everyone's preference. Some cruises are of short duration and are generally of the lake itself, while others are longer, but include part of the French River. Cruises have to be booked a short time in advance, due to the schedule and type of cruise.

North Bay offers great shopping with a good selection of stores, restaurants and theatres. Favorite shopping locations include the NorthGate Square and North Bay Mall. The city is only 45 minutes from the camp.

The camp is ideal for family reunions, "get togethers ", or just plain relaxing with friends.

All of the cottagers and campers make use of the fire pits located at each cottage and campsite. Children enjoy the hot-dog and marshmallow roasts, while adults enjoy cooking the odd steak or pickerel on the open campfire.

In the evenings and sometimes  well on towards morning, some of the campers prefer to quietly relax, listen to the night sounds, watch the stars and simply enjoy the fire.
